    Stephen Robert “Sonny” Wash – Obituary – Mahoning Valley

    April 10, 1934 – October 14, 2021 (87 years old)

    BOARDMAN – Stephen Robert “Sonny” Wash Sr., 87, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on October 14 with his wife by his side.

    He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend, and he will be dearly missed.

    Sonny was born April 10, 1934 in Campbell, son of Steve and Elizabeth (Kozar) Wash.

    He graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1952.

    He had always been a resident of the region.

    He entered the United States Navy in 1955 and was discharged on January 1, 1959. While in service, his ship, the USS Northampton, crossed the Arctic Circle and took part in a proud naval tradition by becoming a TRUSTY SHELLBACK entering the realm of Neptunus Rex.

    Sonny worked as a hydrostatic press operator at Metal Carbides Corporation for 34 years. He retired in 1986.

    He had an extremely strong love for family and always had great love and admiration for the outdoors and nature. Sonny enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially archery hunting and archery.

    In his later years he developed an exceptional passion and talent for building model airplanes out of balsa wood.

    Sonny also loved to collect knives.

    Sonny had a tremendous memory and loved to share those memories of childhood friends, naval friendships, and all the life experiences he had.

    Sonny fought a very serious health problem in 2008, but with fierce determination and willpower, coupled with the wisdom and professionalism of Dr Detesco, Dr Patel and Dr Sarac, but most of all unconditional love, daily support , the care and prayer provided by his wife, Marilyn.

    He was a parishioner of St. Matthias Church and the former St. Elizabeth’s Church in Campbell.

    Sonny had been a member of the Lowellville Rod and Gun Club for 26 years.

    Sonny is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Marilyn Wash (Senerchia) whom he met on a blind date on New Years Eve in 1958. They were married on October 17th. 1959.

    He is also survived by his children Julie (Marty) Oravec of Boardman, Stephen Jr. (Karen) Wash of Poland and Pamela (Anthony) Frank of Huron; grandchildren Martin (Caitlin) Oravec Jr., Amanda (Matt) Oravec, Jessica (Richard) Archer, Rob (Michelle) Venrose, Michael (Jennifer) Venrose, Anthony (Rachel) Frank, Austin (Brandy) Frank and Dominic (Katie) ) Frank; her great-grandchildren Julia, Joey, Bella, Tessa, Harper, Michael, Anthony, Lola, Jude, Charley, Ellie and Ava; and one brother, James (Lori) Wash.

    He was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Elizabeth (Kozar) Wash; her sister, Betty Ann Kroner; her stepfather, Austin (Babe) Senerchia; and stepmother, Joséphine Senerchia.

    A private Christian burial mass was held Wednesday (October 20) at St. Matthias Catholic Church with Reverend John Jerek and Reverend Thomas McCarthy. Interment and military honors took place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
