Columbus, Ohio – Ohio archery hunters checked 4,795 white-tailed deer on Saturday, November 6, the highlight of Buckeye State’s archery season, according to the Department of Wildlife Division. Ohio Natural Resources (ODNR). The first two weeks of November are traditionally a great time to hunt deer with a bow in Ohio.

“Many hunters have found a special date over the years that produces a memorable hunt. It could be a date around Halloween, the first Saturday in November, or the start of the new moon, ”Wildlife Division Chief Kendra Wecker said. “Deer hunting on a particular date or weekend, year after year, is a fun way to create memories and traditions that can be passed down from generation to generation. “
So far, in the 2021 deer archery hunting season, the 10 most popular and successful harvest dates in Ohio are:
- Saturday November 6 (4,795 deer checked)
- Sunday November 7 (3,380)
- Friday, November 5 (3,056)
- Saturday, November 13 (2,938)
- Thursday, November 4 (2,722)
- Saturday September 25 (2552)
- Wednesday 3 November (2,469)
- Tuesday, November 2 (2,306)
- Monday, November 1 (2,163)
- Monday, November 8 (2,142)
In total, Ohio bow hunters harvested 66,626 deer as of Sunday, November 14. The three-year average for deer slaughtered during the same eight-week period in 2018, 2019 and 2020 is 65,271.
Ohio’s top 10 counties for deer harvested in the first eight weekends of the 2021-22 deer season include: Coshocton (2,534), Tuscarawas (1,953), Licking (1,884), Muskingum ( 1,788), Knox (1,763), Holmes (1,707), Ashtabula (1,689), Guernsey (1,608), Trumbull (1,607) and Richland (1,341).
Bow hunting for white-tailed deer has become increasingly popular in Ohio, especially in October and November. These months mark the peak of the rut, or breeding season, for deer. They move around the landscape more easily at this time of year, as do males, making them an exciting time to be in the field.
Ohio offers many more opportunities for hunters to chase deer. Young hunters have the chance to harvest a deer during Youth Weekend, November 20-21. Gun season runs from Monday, November 29 through Sunday, December 5 and again on December 18 and 19. The muzzleloading deer season runs from Saturday January 8 to Tuesday January 11, 2022.
