India’s compound archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam marked her return to the national team in impressive fashion with a second-place finish in the Archery World Cup Stage 3 qualifying round in Paris on Tuesday .
Jyothi was close to her best as she shot a stunning 705 to finish second to Great Britain’s Ella Gibson. The 25-year-old’s performance helped the Indian women’s team secure the third position, while the mixed team also secured the same seed.
Former Asian Games gold medalist Abhishek Verma, who has been in fine form on the tour this season, had the best performance by an Indian in the men’s qualifying round on Tuesday, finishing sixth in qualifying as the men’s team got the fourth seed.
World championship silver medalist Jyothi had not made India’s squad for the Asian Games, as well as the first two stops on the World Cup circuit, and has been absent from international competition for more than seven months.
She returned to the national team after the Archery Association of India held new trials for Stage 3 of the World Cup following the postponement of the Asian Games.
On Wednesday, world No. 3 Deepika Kumari will start her campaign in the classic qualifying round. Deepika is also making an international comeback after the Tokyo Olympics last year.
