Dewitt’s Archery Program is back and better than ever

DEWITT, Mich. (WILX) — A characteristic of a good archer is perseverance

So when the COVID pandemic plagued Team Dewitt Archery’s first season, they didn’t give up.

“We started in 2019 and in March 2020 we couldn’t go to the United States even though we qualified our first year,” head coach Jamie Guerrero said. “Our team decided the kids needed it, they needed to get out, they needed a fun activity and to have some normalcy in their lives.

She says they are one of the few schools that have maintained their curriculum.

And growing.

“Quickly…” Guerrero added. “Sometimes we feel like we can’t keep up.”

The team has grown from 30 to over 70 members.

Their first annual Cupids Arrow tournament hosts hundreds of student-athletes from 21 schools.

“The range is a really cool thing to see, seeing the stands full is a really great thing,” said Joshua Guerrero, Jamie’s son and team captain.

Sport is accessible. without physical limitations.

“There’s no student in Dewitt or any other school district who can’t do archery,” Jamie said.

“It’s all mental, you have to be focused, you can’t have much in your head other than the target you’re focusing on,” added another captain, Adam Jaycox.

All you need is a good goal and you are set for success.
