Dates confirmed for the 2022 IWBF World Championships – IWBF

The IWBF is delighted to confirm that the 2022 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships will be held from November 16-27, 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The hosts United Arab Emirates will welcome more than 300 international wheelchair basketball players representing 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams to compete over twelve days of competition at the showpiece event.

The approved dates for the competition were decided after intensive consultation with the IWBF Competition Commission and the hosts.

President of the IWBF, Ulf Mehrensnoted:

“We are delighted to be able to confirm the dates for the 2022 IWBF World Championships for later this year. We continue to work with the host UAE to ensure that we will be able to stage a world-class event like the showcase ultimate wheelchair basketball and Paralympic sport, and to provide the highest level environment for our elite players.

Proud of the fact that Dubai has successfully hosted championships amid the Covid pandemic, Thani Juma BerregadPresident of the Dubai Club for People of Determination, said:

“It is a very proud moment for the UAE and Dubai to host such a prestigious event. The World Wheelchair Basketball Championships are the second flagship event that Dubai will host this year, kicked off by the World Para- archery in February 2022. With all the precautionary measures in place, we are confident of having a successful competition with world-class facilities on display.Our aim is to make this a memorable event for all teams participants.

Majid RachedCEO of the Dubai Club for People of Determination and Chairman of the Asian Paralympic Committee, added:

“Dubai has already set benchmarks by hosting successful events in difficult times. And hosting the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships will once again put Dubai at the top of the world sports map. This will also help to further develop the sport in the region, especially in Asia. We look forward to big action 10 months from now.

Qualifying tournaments for the 2022 World Championships began with the European Championships in Madrid, Spain in December 2021 – five men’s and four women’s teams from Europe have qualified. The rest of the qualifying tournaments will take place in the coming months, with Africa’s representation being decided at the African Championships which will take place from January 23-28, 2022 in Ethiopia. The Asia-Oceania teams will be decided in March 2022 in Thailand during the Asia-Oceania Championships, while the final places to be confirmed are the Americas which will be determined during the Americas Cup at the end of July 2022.

The World Championships are the premier international wheelchair basketball competition contested by the top men’s and women’s national teams from around the world.
