Over 130 of the world’s top archers will be heading to Co Down this weekend.
They will descend to the scenic Mount Stewart Estate to compete in the 2019 British Senior and Junior Field Archery Championships on Saturday and Sunday 25-26 May.
Newtownards-based Lough Cuan Bowmen, in association with Archery GB and The National Trust, will host the UK’s largest annual field archery event which has attracted competitors from around the world where they will compete for the prestigious British championship.
The All British Senior and Junior Field Archery Championship is open to members of World Archery, with shooting starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Athletes will shoot to win the British Championship in categories recognized by Archery GB: Recurve, Barebow, Traditional, Compound, Limited Compound, Unlimited Compound, American Flat Bow and Longbow.
Speaking on the organization of the competitions, Michael Ferguson, President of Lough Cuan Bowmen, said: “We are delighted to host the prestigious British Senior and Junior Field Archery Championships 2019 in the picturesque and historic Mount Stewart area.
“We have over 130 senior archers from all over the world and the club have worked closely with Archery GB to design 2 mixed field courses across National Trust property that will challenge the best archers in the world.
“Still, we expect UK records to be broken as the competitive field contends for UK titles in various categories, and anyone who shows up will have the chance to see a weekend of field archery from world class.”
Field archery is shot on mixed terrain including up, down and cross slopes, unmarked ranged targets and the challenge of light, dark and shadow. Archers shoot black and yellow colored coats of arms of various sizes which are placed at distances of 5 meters up to 60 meters.
Targets have six concentric rings, four black and two gold. The inner gold ring marks six points, the outer gold ring marks five points, and the black rings four to one point.
Lough Cuan Bowmen is based in Newtownards and was founded in 1986 to promote archery as a competitive and recreational sport. It has over 70 active members with archers holding titles locally, nationally and globally.
